Melbourne Cup Countdown...43 Days to Go!

After putting in good efforts at Rosehill on Saturday, Headturner and Railings maintain their position at the head of Cup markets at six and eight to one respectively. Both horses ran just behind the placegetters in Desert Wars Hill Stakes and showed that they're on track for better performances over the longer journey.

Third favourite Eremien shouldn't have lost any admirers when running second to Desert War as an odds favourite on Saturday-he couldn't possibly have done any better considering the sectionals for the race. Pentane was a shortener after winning over a mile in New Zealand on the weekend. He'll now go for the $1M Kelt Capital Stakes on his way to the Cup.

A horse that may not be too familiar to most people is Tawqeet, who is now also 12/1 with Pentane. This former English galloper was placed in the St Leger over there and with his close up finish on Saturday showed that he's just starting to come into his own with the increase in journeys. He's in the stable of master trainer David Hayes who says that the good looking son of Kingmambo bears a striking resemblance to his previous import and Melbourne Cup winner, Jeune. El Segundo, Zipping and Magic Instinct also shortened after the weekends racing, with Zipping given an extra kilo as a re handicap after his win in the Naturalism Stakes (2000m). Second declarations for the big 3 races will be taken tomorrow.
