Encipher Unlucky in Debut

Our quality three year old gelding Encipher had little luck at his first start in a race when finishing unplaced at Ascot on Saturday.

The run is best overlooked however as he lost three lengths at the start, and was never able to get a run anywhere in the straight as jockey Troy Turner tried to make up cheap ground on the rails...the pair eventually finishing just 4 lengths from the winner.

I mention this run in the blogs column because I believe there's going to be value found with Encipher at his next run because of the 7 next to his name in the form ground. Stick with him if you backed him on Saturday and consider it as "money lent".

5 Most Common Syndicators Tricks - Part 2

Trick Number 4. The "Missing" Vet & Valuation report. Amazingly, some companies only offer the Vet report and Valuation Report “on request”! HELLOO!!! They’re required by law to be included in the Promotors Disclosure Statement for each horse offered to the public! Now, if the syndicator can get this by the Lead Regulator, then really we have to blame the Lead Regulator for not doing their job. Incredible that it happens-but true. You shouldn't have to request these documents-they should be automatically provided.

Trick Number 5. The Hidden Deal. This is where a horse is seemingly purchased by the syndicator for a certain price but the deal is actually done at a much lower price. It’s done because syndicators are required by law to reveal how much they have paid, (wholesale) for a horse before it’s offered to the public. Many are embarrassed by huge mark ups, and so this is a convenient way of getting around it, and hiding the truth, (of an excessive mark up). Example; A horse is stated to have cost $35,000 in the Promoters Disclosure Statement, however on investigation, we find that it was actually passed in at a recent yearling sale, having a reserve of just $20,000. So why now is it nearly double when it could have been bought weeks earlier for $20,000? Hmm, again-you’ve just been had!

There are plenty of other things to be wary of too. Too many for me to go into in this article. Let’s face it, when certain other syndicators read this, (cos they will for sure!), I probably won’t be “flavour of the month” with them….but I think you get the general idea.

I’ve learnt the hard way. In the early days I made mistakes. We all do. I’ve trusted bloodstock agents-only to be sold a horse with three legs. I assumed I didn’t need x-rays! Wrong! I’ve been targeted for dodgy deals. I’ve seen first hand, the above things happen all the time. They’re still happening, and when you know where to look and how to find them, they’re all over the internet!

Trust is a great thing. I was raised by strict parents who, amongst other things, instilled in me the two qualities of honesty and integrity. Qualities that are severely lacking in the majority of society today.

I've Got A Confession to Make...I “robbed” a bloke when I was 10. Pushed along by peer pressure, I gave him the old “I’ve lost my bus money and can’t get home” trick. He was a simple factory worker who had just finished his shift. The older boys pushed me towards him where I sold him the sob story. He fell for it hook, line and sinker. He reached into his bag and took out a small leather purse. As this dear old man took a few pennies out and placed them in my hand, he looked me in the eye and said with a smile on his face, “A friend in need is a friend indeed”. I’ll never forget that look-or those words. I thanked him, off he walked, and off I walked back to the gang who were hiding around the corner. They crowded around me, eager to see how much I’d got. I placed the few coins in the nearest hand-totally uninterested in the “booty” and turned away, feeling pretty low about what I’d just done.

I knew that’s not how I’d been brought up. I came from one of the wealthiest families in Nottingham! I was sickened by my actions and vowed and declared there and then that I’d never “rob” anyone ever again.

I was 10 then, and now I’m 44. Proudly, I can honestly say that I’ve stuck to my word. And I’ve instilled the same honest qualities in my three children. When one of my twins put $2 in a vending machine and TWO toys came out instead of one, she didn’t think twice about going straight into the shop and offering the “spare” toy back to the shopkeeper. Now THAT’S honesty for you!

When you do business with me, you know that everything is above board. I have testimonials given by people from all walks of life to verify my honesty and integrity. But proudly, I must tell you this story…

A few years ago, a motivational speaker was giving a talk, and this particular section was on business ethics. He pointed me out as an example of a good businessman who adhered to strong business ethics. One “wag” in the crowd made a smart comment about me being a “horse trader” and compared me to a “dodgy car dealer”. Without even pausing to think, my friend, the internationally recognised speaker, Mr Brian Leaning-Mizen who had known me for nearly 6 years, and was a client of mine, looked this guy straight in the eye and said, “Let me tell you, that Peter Morley is one of the most pleasant, fairest and most honest men I have ever met in my entire life. As a matter of fact, if you catch Peter telling you a lie, YOU CAN HAVE MY HOUSE”!

A small number of the audience clapped Brian for saying this. The rest were stunned. With the exception of my wedding day, it was and still is, the proudest moment of entire life.

Doing business with people is all about trust.

My clients live all over Australia. Before you do business with me, please ask for the telephone number-NOT of someone that I’ve pre selected- but of one of my clients who lives near you. I’m sure they’ll have good words to say.

And if we do end up racing a horse together, I wish you all the luck in the World, and I’ll go out of my way to ensure you have plenty of good fun!

5 Most Common Syndicators Tricks - Part 1

As a syndicator of racehorses, it pains me to write the above headline. But as an honest operator who always does the right thing, it sickens me to see so many tricks being pulled on people who know very little about racehorses, but who just want to have some fun.

You’ve all met a dodgy car dealer right? And you’ve all bought something or other in the past where you know damn well you’ve been had! But in all those transactions, you probably had a general idea of what the product was worth-in general terms.

But what happens with a horse? Most people who aren’t in the game wouldn’t know the difference between two yearlings standing before them, one just purchased for $15,000 and the other for $150,000. Most wouldn’t know the difference between a colt just sold through the ring for $45,000, or the very next Lot, which just sold for $450,000! And if they were in a paddock, without the benefit of extensive grooming and a nice shiny coat, I’ll bet 9 out of 10 couldn’t tell the difference between a four figure horse and a six figure horse!

Which is fair when you think about it-“cos horses ain’t your game”!

You’re probably a very good architect, miner, tradesman, businessman or hard working scaffolder. You may be the best Mum in the World-“but you ain’t a horse person”!

Which is why you have to trust someone in the industry. But here’s why you have to be very careful who you give your valuable trust to…

Ready?

Then here we go.

Trick Number 1. Excessive Mark ups. Well, it’s actually not a trick-just an excessive mark up! Now I’m not one to refuse a profit, or indeed one to tell anyone what they can or can’t make on any given business transaction. But when I see a syndicator buy a horse for $6,000 and mark it up by $30,000, (ex GST), well I just think that’s a bit rich! Let’s take $5000 for expenses off that figure and we still end up with a horse being sold for FOUR TIMES its cost price!

Syndicators buy at WHOLESALE cost at the sales, and just like everyone else in business-add a margin to form a RETAIL PRICE which covers the cost of being in business, and hopefully turn a profit. The average mark up on horses offered for syndication is between $15,000-$30,000 on an average yearling purchased for anywhere between $40,000-$120,000 through the sales ring.

Trick Number 2. The “Valuation” Rort. A syndicator buys a young, unbroken horse from a public auction, for let’s say, $30,000. Then miraculously, in the Promotors Disclosure Statement issued within a fortnight or so, it’s “valued” at $60,000 or $70,000-by a registered bloodstock agent! The valuation certificate is included in the Promoters Disclosure Statement INSTEAD of a receipt from the sales company. You are not told the purchase price of the horse, (as you should be), but rather just given a trumped up valuation which has been inflated.

Now clearly, the market price of that yearling, after being offered to everyone, is $30,000. A horse can go up in value if you break it in and it starts showing exceptional promise straight away, or if a close relation wins black type pretty soon after it’s been purchased. But a young, unbroken horse doubling in value almost overnight – and then expenses and profit margin going on top as well? No way Jose! That’s a major con job and you’ve just been had!

Trick number 3. Beware the “Video”! Buying a racehorse is an emotional event. Those videos that are on some web sites are emotional things! Let me tell you that ANY HORSE looks good galloping around a paddock. ALL HORSES run fast, (it’s just that some run faster than others!). Whilst you can get a good idea of their athleticism by viewing the video, it doesn’t give you a fair idea idea of their conformation which can be critical to the future success or otherwise, of the horse. DON’T buy a share in a horse just on the video itself. Make sure you also check out the vet report! Remember that more sales are made in the height of emotion-than in the depths of logic!

Girl in a Storm Wins at Belmont Park

Our four year old Metal Storm mare Girl in a Storm continued on with her consistent form of late by leading throught to win race 2 at Belmont Park today. Jumping smartly and being rated perfectly in front by William Pike, she dashed away around the corner to leave the lamenting pack to fight out the placings-eventually being eased down to win by two lengths.

The win takes her most recent record to 4 wins from her last 5 starts and a rare 10 "first 3" finishes from her last 11 starts! Now that's consistent!

She continues to work her way up through the classes and will most probably be given the opportunity to again have another crack at winning a Saturday race very shortly... Here's the video of the win!

Nectareign Wins Trial

Nectareign is on the comeback trail and showed that he was on target with a nice trial win at Randwick last Friday. Trainer Gai Waterhouse is very happy with his progress and as she is prone to do, will give him another practive run before taking him to the races. Her comments are;

Nectareign looks great, has come through his trial in good order and is on target to retrial at Rosehill on Tuesday May 9th. He worked over 1200m quickening strongly in the straight to record 11.6s for the last furlong. Danny Beasley was delighted with his work commenting, "This was terrific work which he did easily and felt great". I am delighted with the progress this fellow is making this preparation.

Nectareign certainly looks like a horse for punters to follow.
