Melbourne Cup Countdown 39 Days To Go!

Yeats Go-Ahead For Melb Trip!
The on-off saga surrounding star Irish stayer Yeats's participation in the Gr1 Melbourne Cup "was finally resolved when the UK Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup winner was given the green light for a trip to Australia," reported racingpost.co.uk. Jockey Mick Kinane (who partnered Vintage Crop to a history-making victory in the 1993 Melbourne Cup) "is thought to be on stand-by for the ride in the event that Kieren Fallon (currently banned from riding in a number of jurisdictions outside Ireland) is unable to partner the 5YO".

Trainer Aidan O'Brien "ended weeks of uncertainty when he confirmed Yeats was an intended runner in the November 7 contest". O'Brien confirmed: "Yeats will go into quarantine at Ballydoyle on Friday (today) for 2 weeks & the plan is to travel to Australia as long as everything is okay with the horse. When he gets to Australia he will spend a further 2 weeks in quarantine, so hopefully it all will work out. He seems in good form since the Irish St Leger. Nothing has been decided about a jockey."

The Weekends Best Bets

There's no city meeting in Melbourne on Saturday due to the Grand Final being on, and therein lies our best bet. Not that I know a lot about Aussie Rules, but The West Coast Eagles look the best of good things! They're odds on, so let's try and find you some punting money on Friday night at Moonnee Valley to lob into the Eagles on an all up doubles basis.

BEST FAVOURITE:
We've all been waiting for Churchill Downs to show us his best, and after two runs this time in, this most impressive looking racehorse should stand up at Moonee Valley tonight. He's in race 6, The Bill Stutt Stakes, and having been placed at the track previously, looks the goods tonight. You'll probably get 5/2 about him, so jump on the David Hayes bandwagon and you should see Churchill Downs to the fore under lights tonight!

BEST EACH WAY:
Dizelle is capable of anything on her day and she runs in the Queens Cup at Randwick on Saturday. She'll be spot on for this event after a last start closing sixth in the Kingston Town Stakes, and this $800,000+ stake earner looks suited here on her way to bigger and better races. With master trainer John Hawkes and Australia's best jockey Darren Beadman on your side, she looks a sound bet.

BEST "SNEAKER":
I spotted one at the trials the other day that's running at York, (WA provincial track) on Sunday. It's in race 5, number 1, and it's name is Fractional. Paul Harvey rode it in the trial and it was "well held" to the line when finishing fourth. An apprentice jumps on board for this race and the 3kg claim will help. He's a former Eastern Stater having his first start in the state, and if it handles the tricky York track, it'll be winning.

Melbourne Cup Countdown...43 Days to Go!

After putting in good efforts at Rosehill on Saturday, Headturner and Railings maintain their position at the head of Cup markets at six and eight to one respectively. Both horses ran just behind the placegetters in Desert Wars Hill Stakes and showed that they're on track for better performances over the longer journey.

Third favourite Eremien shouldn't have lost any admirers when running second to Desert War as an odds favourite on Saturday-he couldn't possibly have done any better considering the sectionals for the race. Pentane was a shortener after winning over a mile in New Zealand on the weekend. He'll now go for the $1M Kelt Capital Stakes on his way to the Cup.

A horse that may not be too familiar to most people is Tawqeet, who is now also 12/1 with Pentane. This former English galloper was placed in the St Leger over there and with his close up finish on Saturday showed that he's just starting to come into his own with the increase in journeys. He's in the stable of master trainer David Hayes who says that the good looking son of Kingmambo bears a striking resemblance to his previous import and Melbourne Cup winner, Jeune. El Segundo, Zipping and Magic Instinct also shortened after the weekends racing, with Zipping given an extra kilo as a re handicap after his win in the Naturalism Stakes (2000m). Second declarations for the big 3 races will be taken tomorrow.

Let Go Thommo is a Horse to Follow

With the obvious exceptions of El Segundo and Desert War who both brained their opposition to win high class races in the easiest of fashions on Saturday, the "be on me next time" run of the day was the West Aussie Let Go Thommo who got beaten just a short neck in The Jayco Stakes at Caulfield. Having his first start at the track, Thommo came from well back and peaked on his run 50m from the post, but still whacked away to go down by the short margin to the race favourite Tesbury Jack. He'll take great benefit from the run and will strip cherry ripe for his next start which is scheduled to be the $250,000 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Oct 7th. Trained by the relatively young Ascot based trainer Steven Ryan, Let Go Thommo performed impressively in Perth returning a series of sub 33sec sectionals before going to Melbourne. He's your rent bet for early October.

Belhus Pair to Feature

Danish Sea and Swiss Watch are both entered for Belmont Park on Wednesday and I'd expect both to win. Small fields can be tricky little affairs, however both are on pace runners which should ensure they each get a fair chance. Danish Sea will be race fit after three runs this time in and appears as the better bet of the two. Swiss Watch will be having only his second career start, but his form was franked by Alchemic's demolition of her rivals at Belmont Park on Saturday.

Did You Know?

Just why are jockeys called hoops? "Hayes hoops cop a hiding", said yesterday's The Sunday Age over Saturday suspensions of Craig Williams and Dwayne Dunn. According to Alec Selman, the former stipendiary steward, an example of it was seen in Melbourne recently when the Irish jockeys were competing there. "One had a fall and rolled along the ground [like a hoop]," he pointed out. The jockey remained motionless, a point all once followed until attended by the ambulance men. "The term originated from the National Hunt racing in Great Britain," Selman added.

Freedman's Lament

Trainer Lee Freedman was reported as saying he "was really disappointed with his jocks" at Caulfield on Saturday. One would imagine he was referring to a couple of indifferent rides by his JOCKEYS as opposed to his choice of underwear?

Saturday's Best Bets

Saturday is a cracker of a days racing with a fair number of the Melbourne Spring carnival contenders going around. Horses like Eremein, El Segundo, Miss Finland, Desert War, Aqua D'Amore, Pompei Ruler, Zipping, Railings, and Headturner will have all eyes on them, but there's also some West Aussie interest there too courtesy of Miss Andretti, Let Go Thommo and Valparaiso.

BEST FAVOURITE: Perth Race 1 Number 3-ALCHEMIC. One start for one win has Alchemic looking like a certainty in the opening event. It beat our horse Swiss Watch on debut, and having drawn the inside barrier in this small field, it should just jump nicely and follow the rail around. Pre post price 7/4.

BEST EACH WAY: Sydney Race 7 Number 4-DESERT WAR. For a bit more value I'm sticking with Gai (cos she owes me a few bob from last week's tip) and looking for a nice each way bet on Desert War in the Hill Stakes at Rosehill. OK, he's up against the WFA Champ Eremein, but with Railings and Headturner not yet fully tuned, he appears as an excellent chance. Remember also that he won this race last year on his way to winning the Epsom handicap. Pre post price 3/1.

BEST OUTSIDER: Perth Race 8 Number 2-KAME'S HOPE. In the last race at Belmont, Kame's Hope is third up from a spell. He ran a very good first up second, and then had numerous excuses second up when he hung in and also lost a plate. The jockey is in form and there's definite value there...Pre post price 10/1.

20 Share Syndicate in Perth

If you'd like to get into a racing syndicate without spending a great deal of money, then take a look at his nice athletic colt by Group 1 winning stallion, Akhenaton. From the city winning mare Foxy Tudor who has thrown 2 winners from 3 to race, (including a stakeswinner), our panel of industry experts rated him highly at the yearling sales. I've asked Ascot based trainer Paul Jordan to prepare him for us, and there are 20 shares priced at $2,977 each. The monthly syndicate fees to pay for all the usual racing/training expenses are just $125/month ($4.10/day).

It's worth noting that with the continuing rise in the cost of yearlings, I can confidently say that this is likely to be the last ever horse we'll syndicate under the $3,000 mark... and he's probably the only horse being sold for that figure in Australia right now! But, he is athletic, he does have a nice pedigree, he doesn't have any obvious faults and he does look terrific when he tears around our paddock! Plus, there's even a free replacement guarantee on him! Brochures are now available.

Breeding Notes - Stallion Feature

For clients of ours who'd like to know a little more about thoroughbred breeding, I'll start to write some interesting articles on various aspects of thoroughbred breeding.

The first is a brief feature on that marvellous racehorse and sensational winner producing stallion, Royal Academy, (pictured here with the great Lester Piggot in the saddle).

Royal Academy is by all means an outstanding stallion. A top class individual who cost $3,500,000 at the Keenland (USA) July sales in 1988, and standing 16.1 1/2h hands high, he's a Champion sire of over 100 individual Stakes Winning racehorses in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. His sons and daughters have won over $65M between them, and never a racing season goes by without him providing the racing public with an outstanding horse to cheer on.

His sire was the great Nijinsky, who many rate as the one of the best racehorses ever to have lived. Winner of the English and Irish Derbies, 2000 Guineas, St Leger, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, (the Cox Plate of Europe), and the Dewhurst Stakes (all G1's), he was Europe's Champion galloper of his era. At stud, he also (as you would rightfully expect) became a champion stallion, and his best son at stud is Royal Academy.

Royal Academy was the winner of his 2yo maiden race by an astounding 10 lengths. He went on to claim Newmarket's prestigious G1 July Cup (1600m), the G1 Breeders Cup mile in the USA, and the G3 Tetrarch Stakes (1400m), in addition to finishing runner up in the Irish 2000 Guineas.

Commencing his stud duties in 1991, he is to date the sire of 1207 runners for 825 individual winners, a winners to runners ratio of 68.4%. He has produced 135 Stakeswinning racehorses in addition to 87 Stakesplaced horses. In total, his progeny have earned in excess of $98M in prizemoney!

From our point of view, we have had three Royal Academy's in our team. The first was the erratic Caribbean Royale who had three race wins and five trainers! The second is our very promising 3yo filly With Honours, (racing next Saturday), and the third is our new season 2yo filly from Juanita who is being trained in Sydney by Gai Waterhouse, (just 1.5 shares remain...)
Royal Academy's profile along with all his latest stats and figures can be viewed here:

Makybe Diva in Foal to Galileo

Everyone's favourite racehorse and triple Gr1 Melbourne Cup winner & current Australian Horse-Of-The-Year Makybe Diva is reported to with child! She's safely in foal to boom shuttle stallion & Gr1 English Derby winner Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki). Makybe Diva (Desert King-Tugela, by Riverman) retired last November with 15 wins (11 stakes from 1400-3200m, including 7 Gr1s) & 7 placings from 36 starts for $14,526,685 earnings. Wouldn't you like to own one like her!

Gold Coast Winner!

Congratulations to all the owners of Magnetic Bay who at the Gold Coast last Saturday became our first ever winner in the Banana state! He broke his maiden status at just his third ever race start, and rewarded followers with a healthy dividend of around 8/1. After leading around the home turn, he kicked clear and held off all challengers to win by a short margin.

I can't help feeling that he's been ridden upside down at this three starts to date, and we'll try and ride him with a little more patience when he next appears-which should make the racing caper much easier for him. Trainer Dale Sutton has him pencilled in for a 1300m class 1 at the Gold Coast on Oct 7th.

Wadham Park Team Update

Moving south now but staying with Dale and the Wadham Park team, our two Victorians over there Red Geisha and Anabaa Star are trialling at Cranbourne today. Whilst Anabaa Star has raced before albeit without luck, it's our first proper look at Red Geisha. Both are working well and pleasing their riders. We'll wait until after the trials before announcing racing plans for them.

Kingston Classic at Belmont Park

Kingston Classic is our representative at Belmont Park on Saturday. He'll start in the 3MW special conditions race over a mile with Pat Carbery in the saddle. It's just about crunch time for Kingston Classic now as he battles to retain his position in our city team. There's thought that he may be suffering a mental problem from the fall he had right in front of the grandstand at Ascot last season-an event which he just hasn't seem to have recovered from. His work on the main grass at Belmont Park on Tuesday morning was fair and whilst it's fair to say that he's most probably a non betting proposition on Saturday, we'd be more than happy just to see him finish close up.

- Peter Morley

Red Wine Update

Red Wine was a shade unlucky when finishing a close second at York last week. He's pulled up fine and has been entered for a class 1 event at Northam this Sunday. Once again he's drawn wide but we've come to expect that of him of late...Nevertheless, he's reasonably consistent in his grade and is sure to give followers a good run for their money.

- Peter Morley

Belmont Runners Update

Danish Sea is doing fine in her trackwork at Ascot and will be entered for a 1600m class 6 event at Belmont Park next Wednesday. All's well with her. Swiss Watch and With Honours are being set for Saturday week at Belmont Park. Baron Orczy is looking good and making excellent progress and impressed with a good workout on the Viscoride track on Tuesday morning. He's about a fortnight from a race.

Arranbrae is also starting to pick up the pace now and he continues to develop into one of the most impressive horses we've ever had. Tiger O'Reilly also put in a very good gallop on Tuesday morning when he worked on the outside of, and finished the better of two companions on the line. He proved to be shinsore that same afternoon though and he's got to go for an eight week break to get over it but he is showing promise as a staying type.

Encipher has completed a bit of pre training and will rejoin trainer Trevor Andrews' Ascot team this weekend. The reports on him are good. Evert will trial on Monday at Belmont Park and she looked fine going evens 800m at Ascot on Tuesday morning.

- Peter Morley

Red Hot Fox Update

Red Hot Fox made his trial debut at Rosehill last Friday and impressed everyone with the easiest of wins. He did it tough sitting on the outside of the leader before going on with the job and scoring by a short margin to the second horse, but a decent gap to the remainder. Trainer Gai Waterhouse is most impressed with him and predicts a bright future.

It'll have to be Summer for him though as he too has fallen to the curse of sore shins (which is only really immaturity) for the third time and is also off to the spelling paddock. Whilst with Gai and Nectareign is back in her Randwick stables and progressing nicely after a stint of pre training. He won't race until the tracks are dry though! Our Success Express colt is due there any time now after also being in pre training, and the Royal Academy filly-also part of Gai's team is due to start pre training next week.

Belhus Racing Blogs - Your Say!

Heres your chance to let us know who your backing for the BMW Caulfield Cup and the Emirates Melbourne Cup!

Personally I'm backing Our Smoking Joe in the BMW Caulfield Cup, based on his good odds and strong performances of late.

And for the Emirates Melbourne Cup, I'm backing Yeats, the brilliant stayer from Ireland, based on his good odds as a result of his confirmation that he will race in the Cup. His result tomorrow in the Irish St Leger should also gauge his progress.

Just click the comments link at the bottom of this post and have your say! Tell us who you like and why, we'd love to know!

Melbourne Cup Countdown

Have you ever heard of an Irishman throwing away Two Hundred Thousand Pounds on a horse? Now that's quite a few pints of Guinness! So when someone in The Emerald Isle has a hundred thousand quid each way on a horse to travel half way across the World and win Australia's greatest race, you'd better sit up and take notice!

The horse is question is the brilliant Irish stayer Yeats (pictured) trained at Ballydoyle by Aiden O'Brien. A former 12/1 chance for the Cup last week, he's now a clear 7/1 second favourite after a series of big bets were taken earlier this week. It's the most significant betting move on pre post Cup markets so far.

The bets were laid ahead of the horse's run in the Irish St Leger tomorrow, and most probably as a result of an official "green light" for a trip down under by connections close to the horse.

So, with 59.0kg on his back for the best stayer in Europe, if you're looking to take pre post doubles, then you might be wise to include Yeats amongst your selections!

Black Tom Back to his Best

The focus in WA racing this weekend is in the goldfields where the running of the famous and history laden Kalgoorlie Cup takes centre stage. This years Perth Cup winner Black Tom looks a standout bet for me - despite the short odds on offer.

OK it doesn't take a genius to tip you a 6/4 winner, (yes I still prefer to talk and write in the old odds), and I hate backing favourites and rarely ever do, but boy, this should win easy. He's got weight too, but he's big and strong enough to carry it. I think the key to the race is that trainer Frank Maynard Snr has already won FIVE Kalgoorlie Cups! So ol' Frank knows how it's done.

He's got Tom absolutely cherry ripe for tomorrows race and having listened to my spies up there who've been to trackwork and watched him go around, he's almost unbeatable! So, it's short but sweet. Get on and get in the queue!

Peter Morley

Gai's Best Bet

Now forget the city meeting at Rosehill tomorrow. Top trainer Gai Waterhouse is sending one to Kembla Grange tomorrow that's a flyer.

One Perfect Day is a filly by Fusaichi Pegasus and has had just the one start for a close second-also at Kembla. She finished within a neck of winning that race which was run within 1/10 of a second off the course record. The winner ran the last 600m in 32.62s and One Perfect Day was 3 wide throughout and running the leader down.

She's had the two obligatory two trials plus the run at Kembla, and is having 14 days between runs. She's in race 2 at 1.00pm EST. Make it your bet of the weekend.

Last Shares in Gai's Filly

And speaking of Gai, here's how YOU can become an owner in a very nice horse to be trained by her..
From a syndicate of 12, just 1 1/2 shares remain in our Royal Academy - Juanita 2yo filly being trained by Gai Waterhouse in Sydney.

One of the Worlds most successful winner producing stallions, and the only stallion standing in Australia to have produced in excess of 100 Stakes winning racehorses, Royal Academy is a legend in both hemispheres.

His progeny win over all distances, and all tracks-wet and dry, and generally make fabulous horses to train. This filly was selected by Gai herself as one of the better buys at the Inlgis Classic sale held earlier this year in Sydney. With her Granddam being a dual Group 1 winner in South America, this filly is a real chance to not only win races, but also become a valuable broodmare propostion too.

The full shares are priced at $7,950 each, the half share priced pro rata at just $3,975. But we have only 1 1/2 shares left so ACT Quick!

Peter Morley

Rosehill Trial Winner!

Just quickly, Red Hot Fox is a horse we've been advertising for a quite a while now. Out of the 8 shares on offer, 7 1/2 have been sold and so just a solitary 1/2 share(1/16th) share remains.

News just to hand is that he stepped out at Rosehill this morning making his public debut and impressed all at his first trial by racing forward, sitting outside the leader and going on with it to win with something in reserve. So if you'd like a share in a horse that's just weeks away from a race and obviously has proven ability, then you'd better give me a call.
Price $12,000.

Melbourne Cup Countdown

Did you know that there are only 7 weeks to go before the running of the $5,100,000 Melbourne Cup at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November? Weights were released for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups last week, and top weight in the handicaps for both races is the 2006 Ascot Gold Cup winner Yeats from the UK.

The six-year-old son of Sadler’s Wells has been allotted 59kg in both of the Spring Racing Carnival’s feature handicap events. He is the sole top weight in the Emirates Melbourne Cup, but shares top billing with 2004 Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow in the BMW Caulfield Cup. Handicaps for the BMW Caulfield Cup and Emirates Melbourne Cup, in conjunction with the list of weights for the Tattersall’s Cox Plate, were announced by Racing Victoria Limited’s Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter at a media conference at RVL headquarters.

Carpenter said Yeats was the outstanding stayer of the European summer with resounding wins in both the Ascot Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup, but indicated he would not find things easy in Australia with 59kg. 'His wins in both the Ascot Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup were dominant performances, but he meets horses who finished behind him in those two races on significantly worse weight terms in both the BMW Caulfield Cup and the Emirates Melbourne Cup,' Carpenter said.

Reefscape, runner-up to Yeats in the Ascot Gold Cup when both horses carried 58kg, has been allotted 55.5kg in the Emirates Melbourne Cup. Goodwood Cup second placegetter Geordieland has 54kg in both Cups, a 3kg weight swing on when he met Yeats in the Goodwood Cup, while Tungsten Strike (53.5kg in the Emirates Melbourne Cup) meets Yeats 4.5kg better at the weights for his third placing at Goodwood. Carpenter said the record of recent Wadham Park purchase Grey Swallow, a winner of six of 14 starts and more than $2.1 in prizemoney, compared favourably to that of Yeats when assessing BMW Caulfield Cup weights.

'Grey Swallow is the best-performed racehorse ever purchased by Australian interests to race in this country and he deserves equal topweight of 59kg in the BMW Caulfield Cup, although connections have said all along their major spring target with Grey Swallow this year is the Tattersall’s Cox Plate.

Just below Yeats in the Emirates Melbourne Cup weights is American nomination Better Talk Now. The four-time Group 1 winner has been allotted 58kg. 'Better Talk Now has been an outstanding performer in the United States for a number of seasons and while he hasn’t won beyond 2400m his best form suggests he’ll be very competitive in this year’s Emirates Melbourne Cup', Carpenter said of the eight-year-old gelding.

Of the local entrants, Eremein is the highest-weighted with 58kg in both Cups. Carpenter pointed to the fact the Allan Denham-trained five-year-old had won more Group 1s than any other Cups entrant as reasoning for the impost. 'Eremein has been the dominant performer in Australia during 2006,' Carpenter said. 'And with five Group 1s win to his name he has won more races at the elite level than any other horse entered in either of the Cups and his performances have already been acknowledged internationally through the World Thoroughbred Rankings.

'The John Hawkes-trained Railings has been given 55.5kg as he strives to become the first horse since Rising Fast in 1954/55 to win back-to-back Caulfield Cups. 'Railings won the Caulfield Cup last year as a four-year-old with 52kg, which represented 4.5kg under weight-for-age. This year he had 55.5kg, 2.5kg under weightfor-age, representing a 2kg penalty against the scale,' Carpenter said.

Hawkes’s other leading Cups contender, 2006 AJC Derby champion Headturner, has been allotted 54kg, the same weight last year given to 2004 New Zealand Derby winner Xcellent and 2004 Victoria Derby winner Plastered. Last season’s Champion Three-Year-Old Filly of the Year, Serenade Rose, received 52.5kg following her dominant 2005/06 season which included claiming the VRC-AJC Oaks double. The Lee Freedman-trained Our Smoking Joe received 54.5kg in both Cups, while On A Jeune has been given 53kg after carrying 51kg in to second placing in last year’s Emirates Melbourne Cup.

Of the other internationals, Japanese runners Delta Blues and Pop Rock have been given 56kg and 53kg respectively. Delta Blues is a winner of the Japanese St Leger, while Pop Rock has won his past four starts including a victory over last year’s Caulfield Cup runner-up Eye Popper at his most recent outing. Cherry Mix is the highest-weighted of Godolphin’s spring entrants with 57kg in both Cups. Imperial Stride has been given 55.5kg, Gonbarda 54.5kg and Guadalajara 52kg.

The early favourite for the race, AJC Derby winner Headturner, has been allotted 54kg while last year’s runner-up, On A Jeune, has 53kg after carrying 51kg to a fast finishing second behind Makybe Diva last season...

"Bossy" Wins FOUR at Randwick!

Champion hoop GLEN BOSS had a terrific day in the saddle at Randwick last Saturday not only winning the first 3 races on the card, but also taking out the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes on the top line galloper EREMEIN.

For me though, his absolute genius in the saddle was displayed with his masterful ride on Ausbred King. With the leader setting a slow early pace, Glen seized the initiative and sent his mount around the outside to take up the running and in turn then proceeded to also slow up the pace albeit in a position where it suited him! Unbelieveably, the other jocks let him get away with it, and of course, when the sprint went on from the 600m, there was little hope that any of the others behind him, (it was just an average race with no obvious high class gallopers) could get by and the race was his. It's my opinion that jockeys Australia wide should be made to sit and watch the tape of that race and learn from the genious that is Glen Boss!

With Honours Ready to Show

Our three year old Royal Academy filly With Honours makes her second appearance at the races this week when she competes in the class 6 hcp for her age group over 1300m at Belmont Park on Wednesday.

She produced a sound run first up at Belmont Park a week and a half ago when she was blocked for a run in the straight but did well to finish so close to the winner. With normal luck in running on Wednesday, she should be ready to show some of the natural ability she's shown us on the training track. Again, Paul King will ride.

$2.5Million Colt Wins On Debut!

Musket, a $2.5 Million yearling purchase and the three quarter brother to Australia’s greatest mare, Makybe Diva, showed maturity beyond his years with a performance at Canterbury last week that had class written all over it.

An easing favourite, Musket was midfield after turning for home with Champion hoop Darren Beadman searching for a run. When the gap came, Beadman was searching for superlatives as the colt fair dinkum exploded away from the opposition to win by panels of fencing-eased down!

"To win a class three event giving away race experience and fitness, he had a lot against him, it wasn’t a gimme,” Beadman said. "He jumped good and put himself in the right spot, travelled nice and went through a skinny opening and lengthened stride really good over the last 100m. He gave me a nice feel, you couldn’t have asked for anymore, it was a 100 per cent effort. He raced right to the line, he didn’t get to the front and say what have I got to do, he pinned his ears back and away he went".

The official winning margin was 3 3/4 lengths and this is a very classy colt which will pay to follow...

Announcing New 20 Share Syndicate in Perth

If you're looking to get into racing - or even to expand your current "stable" without spending a lot of oney to do so, then this nice colt in Perth should interest you! At just $2,997 per share (20 shares), he's a strong, athletic colt by G1 Doomben Cup winner Akhenton from Foxy Tudor, making him a half brother to the 5 times stakes winning sprinter in Macau, Felix MA. I've asked Ascot based trainer Paul Jordan to prepare him for us - Paul having trained the winners of over $2,000,000 in prizemoney for our syndicates to date! I think he does a pretty good job!

The colt is Westspeed eligible which means that on top of the already healthy prizemoney on offer in WA from the start of the current two year old season ($45,000 per race), there's an extra $11,250 to the winner of each and every normal Saturday race too! I'm making this syndicate available initially to our own existing clients as well as the Local Chambers and The Enterprise Club - both business associations of which I'm a member. These shares come with complimentary membership to Perth Racing (valued at $525 with nomination fee) if paid for in full before September 14th...

Profitable Debut by Swiss Watch

Debutant Swiss Watch, (Danetime-Smooth Mover) made a big impression at Belmont Park on Wednesday by running a very good second at the generous odds of 20/1!
It was a game effort at his first raceday attempt and after being second around the corner, he maintained his position, battling away in the straight, and although soundly held by 2 1/2 lengths on the line by the very well tried Alchemy, there was a further 2 1/4 lengths back to the third placegetter.

Jockey Paul King had good words to say about Swiss Watch predicting a profitable future once the horse improves his manners slightly, and gets over a bit more ground than the 1000m scamper yesterday.

Kingy's opinion was backed up by trainer Paul Jordan who also predicted a bright future for the horse. Paul trained Swiss Watch's mother Smooth Mover to win four races and be placed in the Listed Burgess Queen Quality Stakes as a 3yo.

Second Market Shares For Sale

From time to time, shares in our raced horses become available for a variety of reasons. Most of these shares are priced for a realistic quick sale, and if there are problems with the said horse, then they are all disclosed-no exceptions! Here are three bargains.
  • Harrasser. 4yo gelding by Marju. Winner two starts ago when he led all the way to win at Kalgoorlie, and currently spelling. Due back in work later this month. Has a few behavioural problems but once ironed out he could well develop into a city winner... One of the senior partners in the horse is selling his 25% share which is being split into 3 X 1/12th shares priced at $1,375 each. Be quick!
  • Open Eyre. 3yo gelding by Key Business. Two promising runs in the city last month gave us a glimpse of his ability. He did have a minor throat problem which has just been surgically corrected, and he'll be back in work towards the end of this month. 1/12th share $2,500.
  • Danish Sea. This is a quality filly and her two runs back this time have her knocking on the door and ready to win! It's only a small 1/24th share for sale, and as she's valued around the $80,000 mark, the asking price is $4,000 ono.

Horses To Follow

Our very own Danish Sea is one of two horses that I've earmarked for punters to follow in the coming month. Having run a close second in the WA Champion Fillies Stakes at Ascot last November, she then ran unplaced in Group and Listed company before being diagnosed with a slight lameness problem. A decent spell with physio has seen her come back an absolute picture of health and her two runs this time have been very promising. When she gets up over a suitable distance at 1400m-1600m, she'll be almost impossible to beat in her class.

Nothing was more impressive than the quality mare Woodala when she stormed home to run fourth in the Farnley quality at Belmont Park on Saturday. The winner of 5 races to date, she was first up after a brief let up when proving to be a litle costly to punters, but it looks like she's now capable of repeating the form that saw her firm to outright favouite for last years Kalgoorlie Cup!

Age Shall Not Weary Him...

Veteran 9YO gelding Mustard (Vettori-Altezza, by Rigoletto) showed that age hasn't slowed him down just yet when he resumed from a 10-weeks break to score a half-length victory in the $100,000 Gr3 Concorde Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday. Mustard (ridden by Darren Beadman for trainer John McNair) defeated 4YO mare Regal Cheer (Arena-Regal Chamber, by Archregent) & 5YO gelding Fox Lake (Shovhog-Round Lake, by Mustin Lake).

A $16,000 yearling in 1995, Mustard now has 13 wins & 21 placings from 69 starts for $555,717 in prizemoney!

Swiss Watch to Debut

Newly turned three year old SWISS WATCH makes his racetrack debut at Belmont Park this week. Another of the stock of the now deceased stallion DANETIME who is enjoying a good run of late, Swiss Watch is the first foal from the former Belhus owned mare Smooth Mover.

Like his mother (who won four races), Swiss Watch is prepared by Ascot trainer Paul Jordan. Paul has given the horse three trial starts and is very happy with his progress to date, cautioning however that he still has much to learn. It's a certainty that he'll benefit greatly from his first actual race experience, and we can confidently assume that he'll only improve on whatever he does on debut. Regular rider Paul King will take the ride.

Belhus Racing Stables Customer Survey

It's vitally important that any business should always strive to improve their service to their clients. To that end, we've recently employed an independant company to contact some of our clients at random and ask a variety of questions aimed at improving both our service to you, AND the overall experience of being a racehorse owner.

Approximately 25% of our client base will be contacted randomly on the telephone by DEBORAH PITTER from ICON BUSINESS SOLUTIONS, so if it's you and you'd like to participate, please do so with an invitation to make any comments, good, bad or indifferent, with the knowledge that adverse comments WILL NOT BE LINKED to your name, (unless you request it)! So, if you're happy, not happy, or you've got a good idea, and you HAVEN'T heard from Deb in the next fortnight, then you can always call her directly on 6389 2933.
